Community Statement on Bill 837

Message from Community Works:

Updated on April 8, 2022 – In response to the recently proposed Louisiana House Bill 837, which “prohibits instruction on and discussion of sexual orientation and gender identity for certain public school students,” Community Works stands against this bill.

If our elected officials choose to fail us and our young people by passing this legislation, Community Works will not comply. It is unclear whether this would apply to afterschool programs, but as this is in strong opposition to our mission, we do not intend on complying either way. We will offer more details to staff and school partners if the bill passes.

Aligning with our mission, Community Works builds a creative and healthy Greater New Orleans by increasing equitable access to innovative programs that engage young people, which is accomplished through inclusive programming, welcoming students and instructors of all backgrounds will continue to be our priority.
